A Little About Osteopathy

Bad backs, stiff necks, arthritis, trapped nerves, headache:
Yes of course, these often miserable and disabling conditions are common friends of osteopathy’s help and support.

But, colic in infants and children, irritable bowel syndrome, asthma and angina pains for example:
How could osteopathy offer support to such a wide range of health conditions!?

The primary principle of osteopathy is the belief that the body is naturally self healing and self correcting, given the ideal environment.

We usually heal ourselves!
We know this is true, think of what happens when we sprain our ankle, it swells up painfully, and we are forced to limp, changing the way we use all of our body’s muscles and joints. The blood supply is altered throughout the body, and patterns of nervous system activity changed to cope. Then, slowly, the injured ankle ligaments heal, and our limp is “undone”. After a few weeks the whole event is usually just a distant memory.

We take it for granted that our body will always recover full health, but what happens when it doesn’t, or we find ourselves stuck in recurrent episodes of pain, or other ongoing health problems?

The aim of osteopathic care is to offer and support the best possible environment in the patient, to allow this expression of self healing to emerge.

Many other factors will also influence this recovery, levels of exercise, adequate rest, diet, stress etc, will all have a big role to play in letting the healing process proceed at maximum pace. Osteopaths are well trained to offer a full range of lifestyle advice as part of their treatment plan.

We get stucksometimes literally!, in acute health patterns which if offered the right circumstances can readily be settled. Whilst chronic patterns of health, pain, mobility etc, can often be softened or completely relieved with supportive osteopathic care. Whether acute or chronic problems, osteopathy has help to offer. There may be a need to change habits of work, sitting, stretching, relaxation etc, osteopaths are well placed to offer suitable advice in all these areas.

Osteopathy for Infants and Children

Most people think of osteopathy as being a treatment involving massaging, stretching and even “cracking” joints. Whereas, in reality, osteopathic practice includes the treatment of health issues across a huge spectrum of conditions and age ranges.

You may have heard of “cranial” osteopathy, in the treatment of babies with colicky distressed episodes of crying, as well as other health problems in infants, children and growing kids. Well, this “cranial” expression of osteopathy is itself some 70 years old, and works along identical principles to those used in all osteopathic treatments.

Subtle motion patterns in the bones, muscles, joints and fluids of the little patient are examined by the osteopath, with a highly trained and refined sense of touch.

Local areas of distress and tension are softened through gentle support and release of these tensions. The effects form this treatment can be surprising, given that very little external force is used. The osteopath is recruiting the patients “onboard doctor”, their natural drive towards health, to ensure the best possible balance and comfort can be achieved for the little patient.

The scope of this treatment is too wide to properly discuss here. However, we do have a series of information leaflets that we would be happy to send you. Please feel free to call the practice on 01225 868282 and ask.

If you wish, an osteopath experienced in the treatment of infants and children will be happy to call you back, to discuss your child’s specific problems in person. Or, we happily offer an initial 15 minute appointment with an osteopath, free of charge, should you wish to meet in person with an enquiry of any nature. Please call and ask.

Osteopaths have been helping patients recover their health, from a multitude of complaints, for well over a century. Treatment plans can range from 2-3 treatment visits for acute problems, to planned longer term support for ongoing issues.

“When in doubt ask”, our mothers once told us, so, why not ring and ask if osteopathic care could help you too?

If you require any further information or wish to discuss any problems you may have, please contact the Church Street Practice on 01225 868282, or book in for a free 15 minute consultation.
