Osteopathic techniques

Osteopaths use a variety of different techniques depending on the individual person and what they are presenting with. They might include any of those below either individually or a combination of more than one.

Cranial technique

This is a highly specialised series of gentle techniques which focus on the balance of the nervous system and internal fluid movements, which in turn help the body self correct and heal.

Soft tissue massage

These techniques might include deep pressure and myofascial release, to address muscle tension, improve circulation, break down fibrous tissue and aid lymphatic drainage.

Stretching

Osteopaths use a wide range of stretching techniques to both muscles, connective tissue and joints. This can help to relieve stiffness, improve range of motion, reduce pain and prevent injuries in the future.

Connective tissue release

This involves gently stretching and releasing restrictive tissue, such as fascia, to improve mobility, reduce pain, improve fluidity and unwind old strain patterns.

Articulation

Osteopaths use joint and spinal mobilisation techniques. These involve gentle, rhythmic movement of joints through their normal range of motion to improve mobility and reduce pain.

Muscle Energy Technique (MET)

This technique involves the patient actively pushing against a gentle resistance applied by the osteopath to restore normal muscle function, increasing joint mobility and muscle strength.

Spinal Manipulation

This involves a quick, controlled thrust at a specific spinal segment to restore proper alignment and improve function. Osteopaths at this practice find that this kind of manipulation is needed less frequently but, when necessary, it is safe and extremely effective.

Functional Technique and counterstrain

Both these techniques are gentle and involve moving the patient into a point of ease, to then allow the body to realign itself and relieve soft tissue tension.

Visceral Manipulation

This involves gentle techniques to address the mobility and function of the organs and their supporting structures. It is particularly effective on the digestive system.
